COVID-19 Update – February 12, 2021

Harley HempelResident Updates

Dear Friends & Family of Sherwood Care,

There is love in the air as we approach Valentine’s Day, and we can feel it in the halls of Sherwood Care. We can celebrate all types of love, like that between friends, family members, and the love we have for our residents! There is even love pouring in from the community, and we were touched by the reminder that seniors are so valued here in the Sherwood Park community.

As of today we have 4 residents in isolation, completing their 14-day quarantine as new admissions.

We are grateful that we have completed the 2nd vaccine doses for all eligible residents. As new residents are admitted, we will continue to move forward with the process of seeking consent and organizing the vaccination process.

Over 100 of our staff have received their second dose and there is still a significant number who are waiting for their second dose off-site or for their first dose. We continue to monitor and support the staff in taking all the precautions required to reduce the risk of COVID-19 spread in our facility.

Vaccines are a great tool as far as stopping the spread goes, but remember that they can’t completely prevent outbreaks. The best chance we have of continuing our record of success is with our robust infection prevention and control practices, which include masks, eye protection, hand hygiene, and staying home when you aren’t feeling well. Working together and staying diligent, we can make sure your loved ones are protected every day.

Good News

Yesterday, we gathered together to celebrate the Valentine’s holiday in a special way. Residents gathered in the dining room to partake in some delicious cheesecake and enjoy a spectacular virtual performance by an accomplished accordionist, Jordan Rody. This was very special for us, as it was our first live-streamed music performance!! As the afternoon went on, residents and staff enjoyed dancing and clapping along to timeless favourites! It was so wonderful to see the many smiles and feel all the love being shared.

The Primary Care Network has developed a program called Seniors Without Walls. It is a free, phone-based program for seniors over the age of 55 to help reduce isolation. I had a conversation with one of our families and they shared that their dad misses the men’s groups and is completely isolated. I think this would be a good tool for families to keep in their back pocket if they have friends or family members in need of social connection. Here is the link for additional information:

Last week, we told you about Tickled Floral, a local flower company which has put out a note on social media encouraging residents of Sherwood Park to “Spread Love & Kindness to a Senior this Valentine’s.” The response of the community was so significant that every one of our residents received a flower donated by someone in the community.

I hope you enjoy the long weekend, and keep warm and safe. Monday is Family Day, a perfect time to celebrate your loved ones. You can rest assured that each and every one of our residents is treated like family at Sherwood Care, whether they’ve been with us for a year, a month, or a day.

“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!”
