COVID-19 Update – December 30, 2020

Harley HempelResident Updates

Dear Friends & Family of Sherwood Care,

Is it just me, or does it seem like we plan and prepare for Christmas for an extended period of time, and then, just like that, it’s gone? Despite that, I hope you had the opportunity to connect with your loved ones, enjoy some great food and get outside to enjoy the unseasonably mild weather.

It is now official-all staff and resident swabs are NEGATIVE!!

As a result, there is no further requirements for asymptomatic swabbing. Currently we have 3 new residents in isolation, completing their 14 day quarantine period, as well as 1 on isolation with symptoms and awaiting swab results

There are 0 staff off with symptoms, awaiting swab results

Our site remains on outbreak until January 5. At that time, the only significant changes that will occur, will be switching from face shields for eye protection to goggles. There will be instructions and information available for you when you come for your visit next week.

Thank you for your contributions to this positive outcome, through your decisions about whether to visit or not, staying home when you are ill and when present adhering to the PPE and safe visiting guidelines!

Outbreaks in continuing care continue, with devastating effects. Currently in Alberta, 66% of the COVID deaths reported have occurred in continuing care sites, so ongoing vigilance is necessary.

Vaccine Updates:

There was exciting news last night as the Premier and Health Minister announced the arrival of the Moderna Vaccine. We will be working with AHS over the next several days to organize and facilitate the ability for us to administer the Moderna vaccine to your loved one(s). We are planning to begin the immunization process early next week.

Please find the consent form to be completed for your loved one by clicking HERE, if you are their decision maker. There is a spot for you to agree to have them vaccinated and also refuse the vaccine on their behalf.

We have also included a link to the AHS vaccine page, where additional information is available.

These forms will be available at the front entrance for you to complete, if you don’t have access to a printer. If you are not visiting within the next week, you can fax or scan the completed document to:

As we look forward to ushering in 2021, there is light at the end of the dark tunnel we’ve been in. As I reflect back on 2020, I am grateful for the incredible resilience and strength of our collective team. Looking after your loved ones requires a partnership of trust and mutual respect and I am so thankful for your willingness to work alongside us as we strive to ensure that Sherwood Care is “The Best Place to Be and Work”.

May your heart be encouraged by this beautiful verse.

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past….I am doing a new thing…I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43:18-19

Happy New Year!!
